The life of Australia's most prominent musician, Dr G Yunupingu, will be remembered at a service in Darwin on Tuesday.

"The service will be a celebration of his life and a tribute to a remarkable man and Territorian," Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner said.

"Dr G was one of the Territory's most celebrated and revered artists whose music will live on within the millions of people around the world he shared it with."

Dr Yunupingu died in July, aged 46, following a battle with kidney and liver disease.

He was an ARIA award-winning artist - selling more than half a million albums singing in his native Yolngu - and had performed for US President Barack Obama, the Pope and the Queen.

The blind musician from Elcho Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land, first gained prominence as a member of the Yothu Yindi band.

He was a multifaceted artist playing the drums, keyboards and guitar but was most celebrated for his extraordinary singing voice.

The memorial service will be held at the Darwin Convention Centre from 10.45am on Tuesday.
