Two men have been charged after a policeman was headbutted and punched in Sydney's west.
Three police officers were in an unmarked car leaving a crime scene in Penrith when two men, 22 and 26 crossed the road in front of the car about 2am on Sunday.
The 22-year-old ran towards the car and kicked the door, police said in a statement.
The driver, a male sergeant, got out of the car to arrest the 22-year-old when a physical altercation took place.
Police say the other two police officers went to help when the 26-year-old man head-butted the sergeant before the 22-year-old punched him in the face.
Police managed to arrest the men after using capsicum spray.
The older man was charged with destroy or damage property, two counts of assault officer in execution of duty, cause grievous bodily harm to police officer on duty and resist officer in execution of duty.
The younger man was charged with two counts of assault officer in duty and resist officer in execution of duty.
They were both granted strict conditional bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on February 26.
In an unrelated incident earlier, police found an unconscious 32-year-old man with critical head injuries in the car park of a fast-foot outlet nearby on Mulgoa Road Penrith just before 1.30am on Sunday.
The man is fighting for life in Westmead Hospital, while a second man was taken to hospital with minor facial injuries.
Police were told the men were injured during a fight with a group of men who fled before officers arrived.
