Men's downhill race postponed

WHISTLER (Reuters) - The Alpine skiing men's downhill at the Winter Olympics, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed due to bad course conditions and poor weather, an International Ski Federation (FIS) spokeswoman said.

The Alpine skiing men's downhill at the Winter Olympics, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed due to bad course conditions and poor weather, an International Ski Federation (FIS) spokeswoman said.

With Sunday's scheduled women's opener, the super combined, already postponed, the opening weekend of Alpine action at the Vancouver Games has been completely lost.

Warm temperatures and rain have led to soft and wet conditions on the course and an 'emergency group' made up of local (VANOC) organisers, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and members of the 'Olympic family' will now have to decide on alternative dates.

On Friday neither the men nor the women were able to train on the Dave Murray course and organisers said it would have taken a significant drop in temperatures for Saturday's race to go ahead.
