Mexican marines kill 14 in gunbattle

Mexican police and marines have killed 14 suspected criminals in a gunbattle in the state of Veracruz.

Fourteen suspected criminals have been killed in a gunbattle with Mexican marines in south-eastern Mexico.

A group of armed men shot at a police patrol car on Monday in the town of Jesus Carranza in the state of Veracruz, authorities told local media.

Authorities, including marines, then went to assist the police.

One policeman was injured in the ensuing gunbattle and some of the attackers managed to escape.

Heavy weapons, including a gun capable of firing armour-piercing ammunition, were recovered from the scene.

Veracruz is one of the most dangerous states in Mexico and is home to a number of gangs involved in the drug trade and people smuggling.

On Saturday, three suspected gang members were killed in Jesus Carranza in a clash with the military.
