The explosions, one of the worst incidents of its kind in Mexican history in terms of fatalities, started on the afternoon of December 20 at the San Pablito Fireworks Market in Tultepec, a municipality in Mexico state located just outside the Federal District.

Mexico has experienced large losses of life in several accidents involving fireworks in recent years.

In March 2013, a fireworks explosion in the central state of Tlaxcala killed 16 people during a religious procession.
