Michael Di Venuto appointed Surrey coach

Former Australian batsman Michael Di Venuto will coach Surrey in English County Cricket.

Surrey have appointed Australian Michael Di Venuto as the successor to departed head coach Graham Ford.

Ford returned to his former job with Sri Lanka cricket at the end of January, having got Surrey promoted back to Division One of the County Championship.

His replacement is the 42-year-old former batsman, who enjoyed a successful Championship career - chiefly with Durham, and also including stints at Derbyshire and Sussex.

Di Venuto has been his country's assistant coach and lead batting coach under head coach Darren Lehmann for the last two years and led them on the one-day leg of their ongoing tour of New Zealand, with Lehmann unable to fly due to deep vein thrombosis.

Di Venuto, who has signed a three-year contract, told Surrey's official website: "It has been a huge honour and privilege to have worked with the Australian team but the chance to come to a club of the size and potential of Surrey as head coach was too big an opportunity for me to turn down.

"As someone who has always enjoyed the county game, I have followed Surrey's progress over the last couple of years and look forward to working with this talented squad of players."

Di Venuto's batting coach role with Australia will be filled by current fielding coach Greg Blewett.
