Comedian Michelle Wolf took aim at President Donald Trump, his White House team and the American press in a blistering monologue at the White House Correspondents dinner on Saturday night.

For the second year in a row, President Trump did not attend the annual event, which includes a roast by a comedian.

Unlike in years past, there were also no A-list Hollywood celebrities at the dinner. Notable guests this year included porn star Stormy Daniel's lawyer, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, and ex-reality show star and White House employee Omarosa Manigault Newman.

"Like a porn star says when she's about to have sex with a Trump, let's get this over with," Wolf said as she began her presentation, which included multiple references to the president's alleged affair with Daniels.

"It's 2018 and I am a woman so you cannot shut me up. Unless you have Michael Cohen wire me $130,000," said Wolf, referencing the alleged payment Daniels received.

Noting that Mr Trump seemed impervious to many putdowns, Wolf said she would instead attack the president for being less wealthy than he claimed, leading the crowd in a call-and-response segment where she would say "Trump is so broke" and the crowd would respond "how broke is he?"

Some of her replies included "he has to fly failed business class" and "he looked for foreign oil in Don Junior's hair".

Wolf was particularly hard on the women in Trump administration, drawing audible gasps from the crowd.

Wolf said to press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was seated on the stage, "I'm a little starstruck, I love you as Aunt Lydia in the Handmaid's Tale. Mike Pence, if you haven't seen it, you would love it."

"I actually really like Sarah," she continued, "I think she's very resourceful. Like she burns facts, and then uses that ash to make a perfect smokey eye. Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's lies."

"I'm never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders... like what's Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women? Oh, I know, Aunt Coulter."

Speaking about Mr Trump's eldest daughter and White House advisor Ivanka Trump, Wolf said "she was supposed to be an advocate for women. Turns out she's about as helpful as an empty box of tampons. She's done nothing to satisfy women, so I guess like father like daughter."

Wolf also took aim at the press in the room, telling them: "You guys are obsessed with Trump - did you used to date him? Because you pretend like you hate him but I think you love him."

"I think what noone in this room wants to admit is that Trump has helped all of you. He couldn't sell steaks, or Vodka, or water, or college, or ties, or Eric. But he has helped you."

Wolf's routine outraged many of the president's allies, with Spicer labelling it a "disgrace" on Twitter, and assistant to the president, Mercedes Schlapp, writing she was "appalled" by the routine.

But many others on social media defended the routine, in light of Mr Trump's own history of vulgar language and behaviour.

Mr Trump last attended the dinner in 2011 as a guest, when he was a reality TV star. Barack Obama famously mocked him for renewing the "birther" conspiracy about the nation's first black president.

"No one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than The Donald," Mr Obama quipped, as Mr Trump scowled in his seat.

"And that's because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like, did we fake the moon landing?"
