Mike Hussey could become a regular fixture in Cricket Australia's coaching staff, but it won't be in a full-time capacity.
Hussey has been mentoring Australia at the World Twenty20 as a consultant, and his contract ends after the side's final pool game against India.
Cricket Australia needs to beef up its coaching staff following the resignations of batting mentor Michael Di Venuto and bowling guru Craig McDermott.
Shane Watson recently suggested it would be an "incredible luxury" to have Hussey stick around with the squad throughout the year.
Hussey, who helped out South Africa during the 2015 ODI World Cup and has also been approached by Sri Lanka and India, wants to do more work alongside Darren Lehmann.
"But I'm not sure I'm keen to do it in a full-time capacity because if you're with an international team you're pretty much on the road for 10 months a year," Hussey said.
"That's certainly one of the reasons why I retired.
"But ... coming in as a consultant type and helping out for a few weeks here or there, is something that's really interesting.
"It works well (for family life) ... it works OK for the team as well. Having a different voice every now and then, and different sets of eyes to pick up on things is quite good."
It's understood Lehmann and high-performance chief Pat Howard agree.
Many members of the 15-man World T20 squad have spoken glowingly about Hussey's guidance.
The man who played 185 ODIs, 79 Tests and 38 T20s for Australia has already been asked to cast an eye over the future tours program by Lehmann.
"Darren has definitely spoken to me ... we haven't officially started looking at things," Hussey said.
"But maybe there might be some little windows open up.
"Nothing formal yet, it's just in the initial stages ... pretty much the whole focus has just been on this World Cup."
Hussey, who retired from domestic cricket after delivering Sydney Thunder to their maiden title, will remain at the Big Bash League club as a list manager.
