Milford chases early form for Broncos

Brisbane playmaker Anthony Milford says he's slowly regaining the confidence which made him one of the NRL's best players early in 2016.

Brisbane playmaker Anthony Milford is tipping he's on the way back to his best form just as NRL heavyweights Melbourne come to town.

Milford's dynamic start to 2016 has tailed off in similar fashion to the Broncos overall campaign in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old admits his confidence has been low as the Broncos have lost five of their past seven matches to fall out of the competition top four.

Now with second-placed Melbourne coming to town on Friday with their State of Origin heavyweights Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith, Milford says he's ready to fire the Broncos back to the NRL's top.

"I'm slowly coming back to where I was at the start of the year," Milford said.

"It's all about getting my confidence back and getting my combinations back, especially my combinations with Darius (Boyd) and Benny Hunt.

"I think I just went away from my game and there's stages of the game where I just drift in and out. I need to be better and I think I've slowly come back to doing that."

The Broncos were thrashed 40-14 by Canterbury last week but Milford says he and his teammates aren't panicking about their poor results.

The five-eighth says the Broncos are their own worst enemies at times and cutting out defensive errors will be the key to returning to the form which took them to last year's grand final.

"Last year I don't think we had a lot to do with our defence. That was our backbone," Milford said.

"We just need to go back to basics and the simple things that work for us."
