Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says a military solution won't work against the Assad regime in Syria and the only option is a political one.

Australia last month joined the air campaign against Daesh, or Islamic State, in Syria, extending its mission from Iraq.

"There can be no solution in Syria other than a political solution. There is no military solution in Syria, that is perfectly clear," Mr Turnbull told reporters in regional Victoria.
