Patty Mills' improved NBA form continued as his San Antonio notched their second-straight win with a 112-95 home victory over Phoenix.

Mills scored 17 points - shooting at a season-best 63 per cent - with four assists to help the Spurs to a 5-4 record with the home victory on Sunday.

The Australian guard did most of his damage in the third quarter when he shot three-from-three from outside the arc, while teammate LaMarcus Aldridge had a game-high 21 points.

Mills, who signed a $A65 million contract extension in the off-season, came under criticism for his low output when San Antonio lost four straight before their win over Charlotte last Friday when he scored 17.

Elsewhere, fellow Boomer Joe Ingles struggled with his shot for 11 points in Utah's 137-110 loss to Houston.

The Jazz had no answer to Rockets star James Harden, who had a career-high 56 points and added 13 assists, finishing at 19 of 25 from the field.

The MVP runner-up was a perfect seven for seven from beyond the arc until he missed a step-back three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter.

The Rockets have won three straight, while the Jazz have lost back-to-back games following a three-game winning streak.

The other big scorer was Kristaps Porzingis, who grabbed a career-high 40 points to carry the New York Knicks back from a 19-point deficit to a 108-101 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Aron Baynes' Boston improved to 8-2 and maintained their Eastern Conference ladder lead with a 104-88 win against Orlando, with the Australian centre contributing six points and seven rebounds.

Cleveland's tough season start continued in a 117-115 home defeat by the injury-riddled Atlanta Hawks, who ended an eight-game losing streak.

The Hawks were missing five players, but still posted their first victory since topping Dallas in the season opener.

Coming off a winning 57-point performance on Friday night at Washington, LeBron James had 26 points and 13 assists for Cleveland but it wasn't enough to prevent their fifth loss from their last seven games.

Dennis Schroeder scored 28 points for the Hawks.

The Cavaliers have also lost to Orlando, New York, Indiana and Brooklyn during their rocky stretch, which has included three straight defeats at home.

Bradley Beal scored 38 points as his Washington beat Toronto 107-96, while Miami beat a fast-finishing LA Clippers side 104-101 on Sunday.
