Lawyers for Stephen Milne have been granted access to police notes from the initial rape investigation involving the former St Kilda AFL player.

The 33-year-old is accused of raping a woman at a home in Highett, Melbourne, in March 2004.

The four charges of rape were only laid this year after a police review found an initial investigation inadequate.

Lawyers for Milne were on Thursday granted access to a report from the now defunct Office of Police Integrity (OPI), as well as police diaries and daybooks from the initial investigation.

Magistrate Peter Reardon also allowed access to transcripts of interviews with the complainant's mother and friend.

Mr Reardon said the public interest in releasing the documents outweighed privacy concerns, and said they added forensic value to the case.

Former detective Scott Gladman led the original investigation into Milne and sparked a fresh probe when he claimed in a television interview he was threatened by senior police who wanted the case dropped.

His claims prompted an OPI report which found there were reasonable concerns among officers that the case was subject to undue interference.

The court heard Mr Gladman will be available as a witness, despite earlier concerns he would not because he now lives in a remote location in South America.

Milne retired from the AFL this year.
