South Africa is known for having the deepest mines in the world. This makes them among the most dangerous.

Around 63 fatalities have been reported in the mining sector since the start of this year, a figure above the international average.

Godfrey Oliphant, Deputy Minister for mineral resources says the mining sector was not living up its promise to reduce fatalities by 20 per cent a year.

CNN's Nkepile Mabuse went down 4km into the world's deepest mine to report on the human cost of the mining boom.
