Mining giant Rio Tinto has said it was reviewing all new Australian capital projects in response to "shocking" plans for a 40 percent tax on resources "super profits".

Rio chief Tom Albanese said the controversial levy was "with good reason" being labelled a nationalisation of mining -- Australia's most valuable industry -- and condemned it as a danger to investment.

"I've already asked our managers to re-evaluate all new capital projects under worst case tax scenario," he said.
