The most senior South Australian federal Liberal suspects Labor and the Nick Xenophon Team will do all they can to make sure his electorate is abolished in a coming redistribution.

Nevertheless, cabinet minister Christopher Pyne is confident he'll hold his eastern suburbs Adelaide seat no matter what shape it takes.

The Australian Electoral Commission believes, based on population changes, South Australia should lose one seat and Victoria and the ACT should gain one seat each - increasing the total number of lower house electorates by one to 151.

Mr Pyne pointed out on Sunday there were 11 seats in South Australia and his electorate of Sturt was as likely as any other to be the one abolished.

"The fact that I'm probably one of the most prominent South Australian members of parliament means you're all salivating at the prospect," he told ABC TV.

"I'm sure that Labor and the Nick Xenophon Team will do everything they can to abolish my seat."

There has been speculation about the Liberals and Labor joining forces to suggest the electoral commission abolish the seat of Mayo, now held by NXT's Rebekha Sharkie.

Mr Pyne nixed that, saying the Liberals would not be making a joint submission with Labor.

He urged leaving the electoral commission to do its job said endless speculation about what the new electorate boundaries might look like when the redistribution would take more than a year was "a complete waste of effort".

"The speculation is exciting but somewhere, in some seat, will be the people that I represent, where I've represented for 24 years and I intend to continue to represent them as long as they keep voting to me," he said.
