Minister defends coalition health policy

The coalition's health policy was not solely to blame for the loss of Tasmanian Liberal seats at the election, Health Minister Sussan Ley says.

Federal health minister Sussan Ley denies the coalition's health policy cost the Liberal party three lower house Tasmanian seats at the July election.

One-term MPs Andrew Nikolic, Eric Hutchinson and Brett Whiteley lost their seats and say their party's approach failed to meet the expectations of Tasmania's ageing population and was further damaged by Labor's scare campaign over the privatisation of Medicare.

"I'm not sure whether every Tasmanian would agree that health was the number one issue ... I heard that lots of things were issues in Tasmania, I also heard that jobs were an issue ... the ice epidemic ," Ms Ley told ABC radio on Tuesday during her first visit to the island state since the election.
