The federal government has played down the budget impact of energy giant Woodside Petroleum's decision to shelve its key $50 billion Browse liquefied natural gas project in Western Australia.

Woodside and its partners have decided not to proceed for now, citing the challenging economic and market environment.

The federal government is disappointed by the delay, but Resources Minister Josh Frydenberg has told ABC radio there is still a commitment to get the project up in due course.

"We'll continue to increase our export earnings in energy," he said, adding that other major LNG projects were coming on line.

He pointed to the first shipment of LNG from Barrow Island, off WA, to Japan this week.

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash acknowledged that lower oil prices had an impact on the decision.
