Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has used his discretionary powers to grant permanent residency to a Bangladeshi family.

Doctor of mathematics Enamul Kabir and his wife Siuly, a doctor of biomedical engineering, were denied a visa by the Immigration Department because of the potential cost of treating their son's mild autism.

Both adults came as students to Australia and have qualifications that are in short supply.

The family's case was highlighted by an online petition signed by 70,000 people and media coverage in Australia, including by SBS.

Dr Enamul Kabir told Queensland correspondent Stefan Armbruster the minister finally approved their visa on Wednesday.
