New South Wales Education Minister Verity Firth has been asked to front up to cabinet with a proposal to replace all unflued heaters in the state's schools giving a timeframe and budget and other details of the replacement program.
The request follows a meeting with her boss Premier Kristina Keneally after it became clear Ms Firth made the announcement without having clearance from cabinet.
Firth announced all 55,000 unflued gas heaters in the state's schools would be replaced, after a Woolcock Institute study found they increased respiratory problems in some children.
Community group COUGH (Campaign Opposing Unflued Gas Heating) warned against any delay in replacing the heaters, or any decision not to replace all 55,000 of the heaters.
The director-general of the Education department Michael Coutts-Trotter has said the plan would cost 400 million dollars.
