Land searches are continuing for a snorkeller missing off Lord Howe Island.

Jake Barrett, 20, was reported missing by friends after he failed to return from a snorkelling trip around 20 metres off Middle Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Weather conditions meant marine searches could not be carried out on Friday but land searches are continuing, NSW Police say.

"We've also requested commercial fisherman and private aircraft keep an eye on the search area as well," a police spokeswoman told AAP.

Emergency services will reassess the search area on Saturday.
