The captaincy skills of Western Australia all-rounder Mitch Marsh will be given an early test when he returns from injury in the upcoming domestic one-day Cup.

Marsh was unveiled as WA's new captain on Friday, taking over from the retired Adam Voges.

The 25-year-old won the role ahead of his brother Shaun Marsh, veteran Michael Klinger and Ashton Turner.

Turner has been named Marsh's deputy.

Marsh hasn't played since succumbing to a shoulder injury during Australia's Test tour of India in March.

The 21-Test all-rounder underwent a reconstruction of his right shoulder after arriving back in Australia, but is set to return as a batsman only during the upcoming one-day series.

WA's first fixture is against NSW at the WACA Ground on September 29.

But while Marsh is nearing full fitness, wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman is in danger of missing the entire summer after undergoing more surgery on his troublesome right index finger.

Whiteman is expected to miss around five or six months.

Marsh said he was proud to be named captain.

"There are some great past players that have led Western Australia and I'm honoured to be part of that," Marsh said.

"We have a unique group. Although it's quite a young group, we have 22 guys that have great leadership qualities and we're all one big leadership group.

"That's also why I feel proud to be named captain because there were so many great candidates.

"Ashton is a really smart guy, really switched on with cricket and really respected within the group, so it's great to have him to assist."
