There's no secret behind Mitch Marsh turning potential into game-breaking performances, with the allrounder attributing it to clear thinking and hard work.
Marsh scored his maiden ODI century against India on January 23, while he guided Australia to a series-levelling victory over New Zealand in Wellington on Saturday.
The 24-year-old's unbeaten 69 was among the best knocks of his career given the pressure involved with walking out at 4-144 in pursuit of 282.
There was also the distraction of an Indian Premier League action; Marsh learned shortly before batting that he'd been bought for $1 million.
Marsh took great pride in the fact he stayed focused despite the exciting news.
"When you're under pressure for runs, certainly at this level, you think about a lot of things," the allrounder said.
"When you haven't spent a lot of time in the middle ... things just don't come naturally.
"You don't think as clearly as you do when you're in form.
"That's been the biggest thing for me to work on. Just worry about watching the ball and the rest will take care of itself."
Marsh entered the summer of 2015-16 under the pump to score runs.
The allrounder's bowling kept him in Australia's Test and ODI side during the lean trot with the bat.
However, Marsh was also a victim of the side's run gluttons at the top of the order.
"During the Test series, I didn't get a lot of opportunity because the top five were making a hell of a lot of runs," he said.
"I just kept working hard. I wanted to take the opportunity when I got it.
"The last few weeks ... my batting has given me great confident to hopefully just keep going."
Marsh shared an 86-run stand with John Hastings as Australia completed their highest successful ODI chase in New Zealand.
"I've spent a lot of time in the nets this summer working extremely hard. Innings like that and partnerships like that today with Johnny Hastings, it's very satisfying," Marsh said.
"It's great to see my hard work paid off."
The three-match ODI series decider is on Monday, when the trans-Tasman rivals face off in Hamilton.
