Mitchell proud of 2012 AFL form

Sam Mitchell managed a strong 2012 season despite some tough personal circumstances.

Sam Mitchell's 2012 season was even more tumultuous for the former Hawthorn star than it has proved for Jobe Watson, Essendon and the AFL.

Mitchell has spoken of his pride at playing well that year, given he had a young family and his mother-in-law was dying.

The boom West Coast recruit will now share the 2012 Brownlow with Richmond captain Trent Cotchin after Tuesday's unprecedented AFL Commission ruling.

Mitchell and Cotchin originally were joint runners-up behind Watson, who has lost the Brownlow because of his doping ban from the Essendon supplements debacle.

"I haven't had time to digest it yet," Mitchell told Fox Sports on Wednesday morning.

"For me, when I look at that season, I had three kids under two and my wife's mother, she's died since then - she was dying.

"So when I look back at that season, it's with a heap of pride that I was able to put out a pretty good season with the support of my family at a tough time for us."

The AFL has announced a media conference on Thursday morning, where Mitchell and Cotchin will speak at greater length about their joint Brownlow.

They will receive their medals next month in a small ceremony, with the details yet to be announced.

In brief comments on Tuesday night, the two stars made a point of paying respect to Watson.

Mitchell said on Wednesday that his main priority was preparing for the move to Perth.

The Hawks stunned the AFL last month when they engineered Mitchell's move to the Eagles.

"If I could click the fingers and have it done, I would love to get over there and get into it," Mitchell said.

"I have a few more hurdles to jump over before we can get there."
