The tale of Mitt Romney's Irish setter being strapped to the roof of his car during a family trip decades ago has grown to epic proportions, and has sparked the creation of a Facebook campaign, 'Dogs Against Romney'.

Mr Romney has stayed silent on the issue. His opponent Rick Santorum maintains these "issues of character" are very relevant to his campaign during the Republican presidential nomination.

Responding to accusations by PETA of animal torture in 2008, Mr Romney said, "Peta has not been my fan over the years".
