Australian duo Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell endured disappointing days with the bat but were on the winning side as King's XI Punjab shocked IPL leaders Gujarat Lions in a low-scoring clash on Sunday.
Despite the 23-run success, KXIP remain in last spot on the table but it was a winning start for new captain Murali Vijay who replaced South Africa allrounder David Miller as skipper.
Vijay (55) and Victoria's Marcius Stoinis (22) put on 65 for the opening partnership but a middle-order collapse undid all that early good work as the visitors slumped to 4-73.
Marsh lasted three balls before chipping a Surali Kaushik delivery straight to Suresh Raina at short mid-wicket to depart with one run to his name.
Maxwell was out to the very next ball after getting the faintest of edges to a full-length Kaushik ball with wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik snaring a smart catch.
Vijay and Miller (31) took the score past 100 and some lower-order hitting from Wriddinham Saha (33) helped the KXIP chalk up an under-par 154 all out.
However, the Lions struck early, with Mohit Sharma taking the first of three wickets with the key scalp of Brendon McCullum (1) in combination with Axar Patel, who finished with figures of 4-21, to reduce the home side to 6-57.
Australian all-rounder James Faulkner (32) and Ishan Kishan (27) steadied the innings, but any hope of victory disappeared when Maxwell and Stoinis combined to run out Kishan.
Faulkner was the last man out in the final over and tailenders Shivil Kaushik and Dhawal Kulkarni were unable to knock off the runs as the Lions finished on 9-131.
In the second match of the day, Steve Smith's 45 off 23 balls were in vain as the Rohit Sharma-inspired Mumbai Indians cruised to an eight-wicket win.
The Australia captain clubbed three sixes and four boundaries and he and Saurabh Tiwary (57) helped their side to a total of 5-159.
But the in-form Sharma scored an unbeaten 85 with Jos Buttler 27 not out as Mumbai reached their target with an over to spare.
