Mixed relays, BMX, 3x3 basketball for 2020

A move towards mixed events as well as urban sports such as BMX and three-a-side basketball headline new inclusions for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Mixed relays in athletics and swimming and three-a-side basketball are among new events approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for inclusion in the Tokyo Games in 2020.

The IOC's executive board also agreed to add mixed doubles in table tennis, mixed team events in judo and archery and a mixed team triathlon.

An IOC statement said Tokyo would include a 4x400m mixed relay in athletics and a 4x100m medley mixed relay in swimming. Swimming would also include two further new events - a men's 800m and women's 1500m freestyle race.

IOC President Thomas Bach said the new disciplines would make the games "more youthful, more urban and will include more women."

In another move toward urban youth sports, BMX freestyle cycling will join the Olympic program for the first time among a "net increase of 15 events."

However, the IOC says there will be 285 fewer athlete places than in 2016.
