Australia's environment has received a mixed report card, with experts saying there needs to be national leadership and a more strategic approach to policies that plan for a sustainable future.

The independent State of the Environment report, released on Tuesday, also says climate change is a "pervasive pressure on all aspects of the Australian environment".

It finds that while Australia's built, marine and Antarctic environments and natural and cultural heritage are in generally good condition, things are deteriorating in the more populated coastal areas and urban sprawl where human pressure is the greatest.
