Monash Uni responds to terror link reports

Monash University Malaysia has met Malaysian authorities over reports some of those behind the Bangladesh restaurant attack attended the campus.

Representatives from the Malaysian campus of Monash University have met local authorities to discuss reports some of the militants behind the deadly Bangladesh restaurant attack may have attended the campus.

Three of the five men whose pictures were posted by Islamic State as fighters involved in Friday's killing of 20 have been identified in Facebook posts as Nibras Islam, Rohan Imtiaz and Meer Saameh Mubasheer.

According to the posts some of the men went to an elite public school in Dhaka named Scholastic, and then college at Dhaka's North South University, and Monash University's Malaysian campus.

Monash University Malaysia posted a statement on Facebook on Monday saying it had become aware through social media discussions that some of the alleged perpetrators had reportedly studied there.

"The University has not received, nor seen, any official confirmation from authorities as to the identity of the attackers, only media reports and social media discussions," the statement said.

"Today Monash University Malaysia met with Malaysian authorities to discuss these reports.

"The university is, of course, deeply saddened by news of the terror attack in Bangladesh and is assisting authorities with their investigations."

The statement acknowledged comments by Malaysian Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar in Malaysia's The Star Online saying police couldn't confirm whether the men were gunmen or victims, and urging caution over unconfirmed social media reports.

"We will check on all their movements here but I do not think that they were brainwashed during their time in the country," he reportedly said.

Most of the victims in the attack were from Italy, Japan, India and the United States.

Bangladeshi Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has told India's NDTV most of the attackers came from "very good educational institutions" and from relatively well-to-do families.

Police have said all six gunmen killed were locals and five were on a government militant watchlist.

Police arrested a seventh man at the restaurant who they suspect played a role in the attack.

He is currently in hospital.
