Monohull return likely for America's Cup

Catamarans racing for the America's Cup could be a thing of the past, with Team NZ reportedly likely to defend at the next regatta in a monohull.

The America's Cup looks set to return to monohull racing when New Zealand hosts the next regatta.

Italian sailing identity Patrizio Bertelli let slip in an interview that high-speed catamarans are set to make way for single hull boats that can foil.

Bertelli heads the challengers of record, Circolo della Vela Sicilia, who are working with defenders Team New Zealand on the framework of the regatta, favoured to be held in Auckland in 2021.

Team NZ have said the dates and regatta protocol will be unveiled later in September.

The Kiwi syndicate lifted the Auld Mug off Team USA in Bermuda in June in what was the second successive regatta involving catamarans.

Bertelli told Italian newspaper La Stampa the next event run by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will be contested in monohulls.

He said they "will be very powerful boats" which can foil, meaning their hull rises out of the water to create less resistance.

Chief executive Grant Dalton has said he wants entry to be more affordable and for rules to be less slanted in favour of the defenders.

Dalton has also hinted at a nationality requirement be introduced around boat construction and the origin of sailors and support staff.

Bertelli's Luna Rossa team pulled out ahead of the regatta in Bermuda, unhappy at the wholesale changes introduced by Team USA.

They instead chose to support the more financially-lean Team NZ's successful campaign against the well-resourced Americans.
