Ratings agency Moody's has maintained its `Baa3' credit rating on gas and power retailer Origin Energy, saying its financial metrics are expected to improve by the 2017 financial year.

Moody's had placed the ratings on review for a downgrade in January after cutting its oil price forecasts.

It said Origin's production ramp-up at its Australia Pacific liquefied natural gas (APLNG) facility in Queensland, and expansion in margins in its domestic energy markets business would help improve its finances.

Origin's decision to slash dividend payout and capital spending would also help, it said.

Origin has been hit by the more than 70 per cent plunge in oil prices, as it nears completion of its giant APLNG project, stretching the company's balance sheet.
