Moon queries Australian boat policy

The federal government faces United Nations pressure to abandon Operation Sovereign Borders.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged Malcolm Turnbull to reconsider Australia's controversial policy of turning back asylum-seeker boats.

The UN chief met with the prime minister on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur before Mr Turnbull returned to Canberra for a sitting of parliament.

According to a UN note of the meeting released on Monday, Mr Ban "expressed concern over the detention conditions in Australia's offshore processing centres and encouraged the prime minister to reconsider Operation Sovereign Borders".
