Moore welcomes extra work for Wallabies

Wallabies captain Stephen Moore has welcomed the roll-out of extra fitness work for Test players after voicing concerns about their conditioning last month.

Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore is relieved a plan is now in place to get players up to speed with their fitness before next month's Bledisloe Cup opener.

Moore voiced his concerns about how Super Rugby teams were not adequately preparing players for the rigours of Test rugby after last month's laboured 40-27 win over Italy in Brisbane.

Coach Michael Cheika also said more work needed to be done in that department and Moore has welcomed the fact it is now underway.

Wallabies coaches were at Ballymore on Sunday and Monday as the Queensland Reds trained and have been out and about to the various franchises to ensure those in contention to face New Zealand on August 19 were being conditioned correctly.

"We didn't want to be in that situation where we did have to top players up at this stage of the year, but we are," Moore said.

"We just have to work as hard as we can now to make sure we're as well prepared as we can be for that first Test match.

"I think there was a recognition the loadings weren't where they needed to be going into that June series so that's the cold, hard facts of it.

"If you look at the big picture you'd probably like to work that stuff in earlier in the season and I know there's some discussions to make sure that happens.

"All I know is there's a plan, now, right up until the first game. There's going to be some camps and extra work to make sure that we're as best prepared as we can."

There are two more weeks of Super Rugby, plus finals, before Australian players can concentrate fully on the challenge that awaits at Sydney's ANZ Stadium in the form of the All Blacks.

Their series against the British and Irish Lions will be decided on Saturday at Eden Park after they held New Zealand try-less in a 24-21 victory at the weekend - the first time the All Blacks had lost on home soil since 2009.

"It was a very interesting Test match, with the red card and them taking off a back-rower and all those tactical things," Moore said.

"I thought the Lions really fronted up well. Once again, the small moments decided it.

"You don't often see New Zealand outscored two tries to none."
