More arrests over NT spear deaths

Ten people have so far been arrested over the deaths of two men on Groote Eylandt after a spear fight sparked by a family feud.

Three more people have been arrested over a deadly brawl in a remote Top End community that killed two men.

Ten people have now been arrested over the incident in Angurugu community on Groote Eylandt, which involved about 60 armed people on Friday afternoon, and stemmed from a dispute between two female relatives on Thursday night.

Two men aged 19 and 29 were killed by spears during the afternoon of violence, during which four police officers could only look on.

Thirteen people handed themselves in on Monday, of whom seven were arrested, and three more men involved in the group that killed the 19-year-old man were arrested on Tuesday, Commander Tony Fuller said.

"We know who the main suspects are and it is only a matter of time before we catch up with them," he said in a statement.

"We we again urge them to come forward so that we can avoid putting the community through any more trauma than it has already experienced."

Police expect to lay charges later on Tuesday.

Commander Fuller said more than 30 statements have so far been taken from witnesses and participants in the brawl.

More than 160 weapons have either been seized or handed in, including spears and woomeras (a plank-like device used to propel spears), a wide range of knives, swords, and modified tools and implements.
