Northern Territory anglers have been given another chance to catch a $1 million fish.

The big prize, for catching a specially tagged barramundi, failed to go off over summer, prompting the Territory government to extend the competition until the end of September.

As part of an NT tourism campaign five fish have been tagged with the $1 million prize but so far the barramundi have all eluded local and visiting fishers.

However, a number of smaller prizes have gone off with the government giving away more than $300,000 in prize money over the past four seasons.

Tourism Minister Lauren Moss said the competition had helped boost the Territory's reputation as one of the best places in the world to fish.

"I encourage all Australians, whether anglers or not, to come to the Territory, try their hand at catching the million dollar fish and enjoy our unique tourism experiences while they're here," she said.
