More 'love in the air' at parliament with Abbott gone

Opinion polls and confidence readings have swung behind Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull - now even opposing politicians think the change is for the greater good.

Liberal Democratic Party senator David Leyonhjelm says there's a "lot more love in the air" at parliament house since the removal of Tony Abbott as Liberal leader a month ago.

Labor's Ed Husic concedes that from its own political perspective, the opposition would have preferred Mr Abbott was still PM.

"But the fact of the matter is the country is better that he's not," Mr Husic told Sky News on Sunday.

The change of leadership allows policy avenues to be explored without triggering a hysterical reaction or scare campaign, he said, opening the way for a contest of ideas.

Senator Leyonhjelm has had talks with an unprecedented eight ministers in the past week on various issues.

"It looks like they are off the leash ... they seem to be given a licence to talk to us," he told Sky News.

Deputy Greens leader Scott Ludlam said he had been impressed with Mr Turnbull, particularly with the government's change of heart over federal funding for light rail on the Gold Coast and flipping a policy that the commonwealth wouldn't invest in cities.

He said the door was closed to the Greens under Mr Abbott.

"With Mr Turnbull ... we can have more of an intelligent argument," he told Sky News.

"We can dispose with the three-word slogans and just the bizarre backwardness we saw for the last couple of years."

Resources Minister Josh Frydenberg, who voted for Mr Abbott in the leadership spill, said he had very positive feedback for Mr Turnbull from his recent official meetings in Turkey, the Philippines and Japan.

"Malcolm Turnbull has had a fantastic start as PM," he told ABC television.

Mr Frydenberg also praised Mr Abbott for handling himself in a "very statesman-like" manner since leaving the top job.
