Close to two dozen more refugees have been flown from detention in Nauru for resettlement in the US.

A spokesperson for Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton said 22 refugees have made the trip as part of a deal struck between former US president Barack Obama and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Afghani, Pakistani and Rohingyans as well as one Tamil family were among those to depart, according to Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul.
"Resettlement after five years of uncertainty on Nauru is very welcome for those who are finally being resettled," Mr Rintoul told AAP on Sunday.

"Some people now have a chance to make a new life and get the protection they need."

Advocates claim the flight still leaves behind over 900 refugees and asylum seekers on Nauru, including around 130 children.

But Mr Rintoul said the worsening mental health of refugees on Nauru, as well as increased attacks on some single women, made for a dire situation.
