More than 100 people have been arrested and others reported for a range of mainly behavioural offences as South Australians celebrated the New Year.

Police made 140 arrests, nine reports and also issued almost 200 expiation notices from Saturday afternoon until early Sunday.

A number of arrests involved drug possession or consumption of alcohol in dry zones with crowds of 30,000 watching the fireworks in the centre of Adelaide and another 55,000 gathering along the coast.

A crowd of about 45,000 also attended the Big Bash match at Adelaide Oval with many people moving between events, making the celebrations challenging for police, Assistant Commissioner Paul Dickson said.

As well as the arrests police also conducted 6000 blood alcohol tests with 29 drivers found to be over the limit.

Seven drivers tested positive for drugs among 115 tested.

During the evening a young female pedestrian was struck by a car at suburban Somerton Park and was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre with critical injuries.

Mr Dickson said despite the range of incidents, police were generally happy with the crowd behaviour given the large number of people out and about.

Along the Adelaide coastline, 40,000 people attended the celebrations at Glenelg and another 15,000 gathered at Brighton with the local council describing the two family-friendly events as a great success.

"SA Police acted quickly to address the few incidents where people were found to be drinking in the dry zone, and we're very pleased to note reports that there were very few negative incidents," Councillor Susan Lonie said.

Among other good news on the first day of 2017, two South Australians have become instant millionaires thanks to the New Year's Eve Lotto draw.

They each picked up $1.3 million for being among the 23 winners across the country to share in the $30 million prize pool.
