More to do on domestic violence: Andrews

Victoria has a long way to go to tackle domestic violence after a string of high-profile deaths, Premier Daniel Andrews says.

A string of high-profile deaths with alleged domestic violence links shows Victoria has a long way to go to tackle the issue, Premier Daniel Andrews says.

His comments come the day after a man was charged with the murder of Phillip Island mother-of-three Samantha Fraser, and Borce Ristevski was committed to stand trial for murdering his wife Karen in 2016.

Coroner Sara Hinchey the same day called on police to review family violence-related deaths when there was a known history of incidents between a victim and perpetrator, following her findings into the 2011 death of 60-year-old Joy Rowley.

Mr Andrews expected Judge Hinchey's "common sense" recommendations to be implemented.

"The terrible incidents that we've seen reported in recent days confirm for all of us that we still have a long way to travel on this journey of keeping Victorian women and their children safe," the premier told reporters on Friday.

"A woman a week across our country is being murdered by a current or former partner. It's not just a Victorian issue, it is a national issue.

"And we need a national response that I think is many more dollars, much more effort and that need to be replicated right across the nation."

Judge Hinchey on Thursday also called on the state government to review each year the adequacy of resources and funding for family violence support services.

Ms Rowley was found dead in her Rye home in October 2011 and her former partner, James Mulhall, was later sentenced to 19 years' jail after pleading guilty to her murder.

Police recorded a number of domestic violence incidents between the couple and Mr Mulhall was facing related charges at the time of the murder, Judge Hinchey said.

She found a lack of review into Ms Rowley's case, both around the time of her death and up until the coronial investigation, resulted in "a lost opportunity for Victoria Police to engage in meaningful reflective practice as early as 2011".
