Morgan happy with DCE Origin skipper call

He was the man who missed out but Michael Morgan says he couldn't be happier with Daly Cherry-Evans' selection as Queensland's State of Origin captain.

Michael Morgan has no hard feelings when it comes to missing out as Queensland's State of Origin captain.

In fact, he's thrilled Daly Cherry-Evans got the nod to become the 15th man to lead the Maroons.

Fearing the North Queensland man might be upset with the decision, coach Kevin Walters called Morgan to explain his decision but his concern was not necessary according to the 27-year-old.

"I'm very happy for Daly, honestly. He's a terrific leader and he's shown that this week the first few days in," Morgan told AAP.

"I support him 100 per cent. Kevvie had a chat to me after he announced it and said he hopes I'm not too disappointed but, like I said, I'm extremely happy for Daly.

"I believe he's the right man for the job."

Morgan's leadership credentials have been proven by his ascension to the captaincy at the Cowboys following Johnathan Thurston's retirement.

Thurston is one of several older heads no longer around the Queensland setup including Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater.

Now entering his fifth year of Origin and with 12 Australian caps to his name, Morgan knows he is one of those in the Maroons squad who have to step up to fill the void left by those great names regardless of whether he's captain or not.

"It's sort of just a natural progression throughout your career,' he said.

"Having the 'C' next to my name back at the Cowboys, I've enjoyed that this year so it's probably just happened that part of that has fed from there I guess.

"There's a number of good leaders in this team as well. I don't feel like I need to do anything out of the ordinary.

"If we're talking about game plans or anything like that, I'll be happy enough to throw my opinion in and speak up when I feel I need to but, like I said before, Daly's been chosen as the captain and I think he was the right choice."
