Morris keen to keep Braileys at Cronulla

Cronulla are hopeful of re-signing younger Brailey brother Blayke to a new deal in a bid to keep his sibling combination with Jayden at the NRL club.

Cronulla coach John Morris says the Sharks are continuing to work through an "unprecedented" predicament as they attempt to retain both Brailey brothers on long-term deals.

Speculation has ramped up this week over the future of off-contract Blayke Brailey, after he made a bright start to his career over the opening fortnight.

The 20-year-old has come off the bench in both games to give older brother Jayden, who has established himself as the first-choice hooker over the past two years, a spell.

Jayden has two seasons left on his current deal, however, Cronulla could be forced into the awkward situation of prioritising one brother over the other.

"I can't remember. It's kind of unprecedented really, two brothers sharing the same position," Morris said on Thursday.

"You look at the Johns brothers, the Burgess brothers, the Morris brothers - the positions they've shared have been dual positions in the 13.

"But being hooker, obviously there's only one."

The Sharks are understood to have already opened discussions with Blayke, who has reportedly attracted interest from the Wests Tigers and Canterbury.

However, Morris is hopeful of having the pair for as long as possible.

"We really want to hang onto both of them as long as we can given they've been local juniors and come through our system," he said.

"Blayke being a young player off-contract, I can certainly see them playing together again for at least another 12 months.

"We're hoping to get that sorted. We'll work through it with the family.

"We understand it's a sensitive topic, so we'll keep trying to come up with the right outcome for everyone involved."

Morris believes Blayke's emergence, as well as the club's intention to bring back James Segeyaro, has resulted in Jayden finding a new level this year.

"He's started the year really good. I've been really impressed with Jayden, having his brother snapping at his heels there," Morris said.

"And bringing Chicko back, that competition can only be healthy for the squad."
