NSW State of Origin winger Brett Morris has announced his retirement from representative football, effective immediately.

Morris, who has played 14 games for NSW, took to Instagram to confirm his retirement on Saturday.

The decision will mean the 30-year-old won't feature for the Kangaroos in Australia's end-of-year World Cup campaign, of which he was a chance of selection.

"It was an absolute honour to wear the Blues jersey for one last time," Morris wrote.

"I'm so proud to have been able to represent my state and my family in the toughest arena of all and have now made the decision to retire from rep football."

Morris made his debut for the Blues in 2010, and played a key role in winning the opening game of their victorious 2014 series win, before he was ruled out of the next two games with injury.

He played all three games of this year's series, and made a classic try-saving tackle on Queensland Cooper Cronk in the early stages of the Blues' loss in Wednesday's decider.

He bows out with the incredible strike rate of 23 tries in 18 Tests for Australia since his debut in 2009, having also played a role in their 2013 World Cup success.

He remains contracted with Canterbury until the end of next year.
