Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison says he understands the importance of the future submarine contract to Adelaide and South Australia.

He says announcements on how many submarines will be built and where they will be built will be made at some point in the future.

But he says the government has a keen understanding of the significance of the project to SA.

A decision to build the Navy's new frigates in SA made it clear the government was well aware of the importance of having that capability and what it meant to the state's economy, the treasurer told a charity event in Adelaide on Wednesday.

"So, we get that," Mr Morrison said.

"You should rest assured that we have a keen understanding of the significance of that project to South Australia."

His comments came a day after Defence Minister Marise Payne told a defence conference the government would not rush to name the group to build the next fleet of subs.
