Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison has expressed sympathy towards Western Australia's plight over the carve up of the GST.

The state will receive less than 30 cents in the dollar of GST that it raises this financial year.

"I expressed a lot of sympathy with the absurdity of the outcomes the system was producing," Mr Morrison told The West Australian, adding that WA should be comforted that the federal government understood the problem.
