Peter Dutton has given his support for former rival Scott Morrison to remain Liberal party leader regardless of the election outcome.

"Scott Morrison should stay leader, win or lose, but my only focus is on him winning because we've got to save our country from Bill Shorten," the Home Affairs minister told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

"I'm only concentrating on the win outcome because the thought of Bill Shorten being elected terrifies more people in my electorate than I've ever seen."

Mr Dutton said there is still a lot of hard work to do before the May 18 poll to make sure Mr Shorten doesn't become prime minister.
