Morrison wants to future-proof GST system

Scott Morrison doesn't want any state to go through what WA suffered on its GST take and will aim to future-proof the system in the next couple of years.

Treasurer Scott Morrison will aim to put a floor under what share the states and territories receive from the GST revenue pie, but only when Western Australia's share increases as the system rebalances itself.

Mr Morrison wants to future-proof the system so no state will have to suffer what WA has gone through in the past couple of years, which forced a $1 billion bail-out from the federal government.

"It's not easy to address but what you have to do is you have to be patient, you have to wait until the system rebalances so that every one is back at a normal level and then you talk about a reasonable floor that you put underneath that point," the treasurer told Perth's 6PR radio on Wednesday.
