Treasurer Scott Morrison has refused to buy in to suggestions the corporate watchdog should investigate whether the Nine Network paid a bribe to free a 60 Minutes crew in Lebanon.
"I am not going to respond to hypotheticals," he told Seven Network on Thursday.
Mr Morrison reminded travellers to obey the laws in countries they visit.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said it was a matter for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
Overlooked in the debate was a very difficult area of custody law where one partner takes children overseas and the other can't see them, he told radio 3AW.
