Mosquito-borne virus risk in WA increased

Health authorities are warning the risk of contracting Ross River and Barmah Forest virus in WA's south, including Perth, is high over coming months.

The risk of contracting debilitating mosquito-borne viruses in WA's South West region and metropolitan Perth is predicted to increase over summer.

The Department of Health says Ross River Virus and Barmah Forest Virus have been detected in both areas.

The department is helping local government authorities undertake mosquito management programs, and residents and travellers are advised to take precautions to avoid bites.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for the viruses, which inflict symptoms including painful or swollen joints, sore muscles, skin rashes, fever, fatigue and headaches - lasting for months in some cases.
