Ford's Chaz Mostert has adapted best to the bright lights of Sydney by taking out the Supercars' first practice.

In the sport's first night event in Australia since 1997, the Tickford Racing flyer left it until the final seconds to pinch top position at Sydney Motorsport Park.

It was an outstanding session for Tickford on Friday night after a difficult season, with 2015 champion Mark Winterbottom finishing third behind Holden's Scott Pye in second.

Championship leader Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top five behind Nissan's Rick Kelly in fourth.

Mostert, who sits eighth in the standings, hasn't won a race since claiming victory on the Gold Coast last year and is eager to capitalise on his good record in Sydney after winning two races in 2015.

"It felt really quick out there, probably the fastest a Supercar has ever felt for me, flashing through bits of the light out of the darkness," Mostert said.

"I'm looking forward to the big race, it's going to be pretty exciting and we'll see how we go in qualifying."

A solid crowd turned out to witness the cars for the 40-minute session with 60 temporary light towers illuminating the track.

Ford ace McLaughlin has a 131-point gap on Red Bull Holden's Shane van Gisbergen after the pair split the two races at Ipswich last month.

Qualifying will get underway at 4.20pm on Saturday before the 300km race from 7.20pm.
