A 21-year-old Rockhampton woman gave birth to a baby boy at home, before he was found outside an ambulance station, police say.

A baby boy who was abandoned at a central Queensland ambulance station was just hours old.

Police tracked down the woman believed to be the mother at a Rockhampton home about 5am (AEST) on Thursday.

Detective Acting Superintendent Darrin Shadlow says the 21-year-old local woman went through labour in the bedroom and the bathroom.

It is not clear if the mother, or another woman, was the one who dumped the child at the ambulance station on Fitzroy Street.

Paramedics heard a buzzer and opened the door to find the infant about 1am on Thursday.

He was found wrapped in a blanket and in good health, but was taken to Rockhampton Hospital for observation.

The mother is recovering at the same hospital, but is yet to be reunited with the child.

No charges have been laid.

"Further on if something comes up ... we will look at charges then," Supt Shadlow said.

Police didn't want to provide details about the mother, including whether she had other children.

Supt Shadlow also wouldn't speculate on why she gave up her child.

"She's been through a great deal, so we'll leave it at that," he said.

"It's very concerning, obviously it's a newborn child and it is very distressing for a lot of people concerned."

A man was also found at the home, but he wasn't the father.

The baby was the second in a week to be abandoned in Queensland.

A baby boy, nicknamed Moses, was left on the doorstep of a Logan home on Saturday morning.

The mother was found on Sunday and hasn't been charged either.

Queensland's Liberal National Party last week adopted a policy, at its state conference, to introduce safe havens for babies.

It would allow birth mothers to safely and anonymously relinquish their newborn babies without prosecution.

Those babies would be placed for adoption.

Child Safety Minister Tracy Davis says the government has neither ruled the proposal in or out.

"The government considers the views and opinions of all stakeholders and interested individuals when developing policy," she told AAP in a statement.
