Mother of murder accused brothers drowns

The mother of two men accused of stabbing a homeless man to death has drowned at Maroubra Beach.

The mother of two men accused of murder has drowned at the same Sydney beach the siblings are alleged to have stabbed a homeless man to death.

Vanessa Travers' body was found by a passer-by at Maroubra Beach on Friday morning.

It's thought she got into trouble during a late-night swim and drowned in rough surf.

Ms Travers' sons, Ray, 20, and Jacksun, 19, have been charged with the stabbing murder of Peter Hofmann in June 2017.

The 68-year-old, who'd been living in his Ford Laser after falling on hard times, was found dead in his car on Mons Avenue at Maroubra Beach on June 21. He'd suffered multiple stab wounds.

Ray Travers has a "My Brothers Keeper" tattoo across his stomach, which is the motto of the infamous surfing brotherhood the Bra Boys.

Friends of Ms Travers paid tribute to the mother on Facebook.

"Rip Aunty Vanessa Travers love you and going to miss you so much carnt (sic) explain how shattered I am your gone," one man wrote on Friday.

"RIP Vanessa Travers. Friends for 33yrs you will be sadly missed," another said.

The discovery of male and female clothing on Maroubra beach near where Ms Travers' body was found sparked fears another person was missing, prompting an air search that was called off on Friday afternoon.

The search, involving two rescue helicopters, failed to find a man and shortly after 1.30pm detectives confirmed the male clothes was not linked to the woman's body.

Ray and Jacksun are scheduled to appear before Sydney's Central Local Court on March 22.
